How does CTC differ from Dual Credit?
CTC is a form of dual credit that allows students to complete their first year of technical trades training and earn credit towards their high school graduation. Dual credit is for high school students to get a head start in their academic post-secondary journey, and it provides students with post-secondary credits in various academic courses.
Who is Eligible for CTC?
CTC programs are open to students entering Grade 12 who meet the following requirements:
1. From School District 28 (Quesnel), 57 (Prince George) or 91 (Nechako Lakes)
2. “C+” average or higher in Grade 11
3. Satisfactory work habits and good attendance records
How to apply?
Step 1: Complete a CTC Application for Admission Package, available from school counsellors, school work experience coordinators, or the Trades office at CNC.
Step 2: Submit the completed forms to your career preparation coordinator or school counsellor, or directly to the Trades office at CNC.
Additional Notes
- Non-SD57 students must arrange room and board in Prince George for the duration of the CTC program, and arrange for their own school district to approve funding.
- Quesnel students (SD28) should speak with the District Career Preparation Coordinator.
- Lakes District and Nechako Region students (SD91) should speak with the Career Tech Advisor at their local high schools.

Selection process
As demand is high, entrance to CTC programs is competitive. Applicants must:
- Attend a program interview
- Complete Grade 11 before starting
- Have a serious interest in one of the programs
- Complete and submit a CTC student application
Start your journey towards a Carpenter career
Join the 3-day, tuition-free Carpentry Exploration course at CNC Quesnel.
In this hands-on course, you will:
- Work with woodworking tools and equipment.
- Build your own bench in our shop.
- Learn more about the Carpenter Foundation Program, starting this February.
Requirements:
- Participants must be 19 years or older.
- Steel-toed boots are mandatory for shop safety.
Seats are limited and filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

The calendar/schedule for CTC students is slightly different than the that of the School District. The calendar below contains important dates, including holidays and start/end dates.
The CTC Program is dual-credit, which means the credits that students earn at CNC translate into high school credits. The document below is for counsellors and school systems admins to reference when entering grades.
SkilledTradesBC (STBC) is the provincial organization that coordinates British Columbia's skilled trades system. The SkilledTradesBC website is a great resource for trades program outlines, apprenticeship registration, and accessing your trades transcript.
Working as a student
Remember, we need a journeyperson's name, TQ number and signature to report the hours to SkilledTradesBC. We will not accept your work-based training forms without this information. If you or your employer have any questions regarding this form, please don't hesitate to contact the CTC office and we'll be happy to explain the process.
SkilledTradesBC cards
If you lost your SkilledTradesBC registration cards, you must fill out a SkilledTradesBC replacement form and submit it to SkilledTradesBC with payment. The CTC office will have your SkilledTradesBC number on file. When CTC students with SkilledTradesBC registration cards find an employer or change employers, they must provide SkilledTradesBC with the name of their new employer and submit the appropriate SkilledTradesBC form.
College Certificate
On completion of Grade 12 you will receive credit for your program at CNC.
Continuing your Apprenticeship
If you wish to continue your apprenticeship, the first thing to do is to find an employer willing to sponsor you. They must register as your sponsor with SkilledTradesBC using the Apprentice and Sponsor Registration Form. To register for your next levels at the College of New Caledonia, you must submit a NEW CNC APPLICATION. Visit the CNC Trades Website to learn more.
Financial aid
Below are scholarship and bursary options available to CTC students. To apply for a scholarship or bursary, please visit Financial Aid.
Jim Rose was the coordinator of the CTC from its inception in 1998 until he retired in December 2004. Jim's unfailing dedication, his tireless drive to promote the CTC's programs and assist its students and his tenacity in helping fund students in need are the inspiration for the Jim Rose Legacy Endowment Fund / Tuition Credit. This award will provide a perpetual source of funding as a tuition credit for a CTC student.
Eligibility and selection process
Open to any student in the Career Technical Centre (CTC) program, attending the College of New Caledonia with demonstrated financial need.
Selection will be made primarily on the basis of financial need. Students attending the CTC program at the College of New Caledonia need to complete a college bursary application and must have successfully completed the first semester of their Grade 11 year before the tuition credit is granted.
Selection will be made by the College of New Caledonia CTC Program Advisory Committee.
Secondary School Apprenticeship Program means an educational program that consists of workplace-based training where secondary students register as apprentices with SkilledTradesBC (Ministerial Order 282/04).
Secondary School Apprenticeship (SSA) program involves part-time work within a trade - something many secondary students are doing already. You might already be a secondary school apprentice and not even know it!
If you are still a high school student working part-time in a trade, you are probably a 'hidden apprentice'. By registering as an SSA student, you will be able to earn dual credit for the work you're already doing, become eligible for a $1000 scholarship, and get a head start on earning your trade certification.

SSA eligibility
To qualify for SSA funding, you must be between 15 and 19 years old, be registered in School District 57, and have an employer that will sponsor you.
SSA grant requirements
- Have a minimum of 480 hours logged with SkilledTradesBC
- Maintained a C+ average in all grade 12 courses
- Graduated Grade 12 with a full graduation certificate (Dogwood)
- Be working or training 5 months after you have graduated, OR have logged 1100 hours with SkilledTradesBC
